The term "Fatigue Strength under Variable Stress Amplitude" characterises this subsection of engineering and technology as a means of assessment for the behaviour of materials, structural components and plants under cyclic load. It also stands for a field of engineering work incorporating producers and operators of machinery, apparatus and production systems. These all aim at dimensioning of structural components with respect to service life as well as the determination of a useful life of aggregates to be achieved both safely and economically.
Since the foundation in 1972, the then "Arbeitsgemeinschaft Betriebsfestigkeit im VDEh" (work group "fatigue strength under variable stress amplitude" within the German Iron and Steel Institute), today´s "Verein zur Förderung der Forschung und der Anwendung von Betriebfestigkeitskenntnissen in der Eisenhüttenindustrie (VBFEh)", has been occupied with the conversion of research results from this area to design, process control, and the operation of engineering components. In this respect, fatigue strength under variable stress amplitude is useful in achieving components and constructions of both sufficient safety and economic efficiency.
A relatively young, but rapidly growing technology such as this brings about its own terminology. Increasing know-how transfer on an international level demands a dictionary covering all these special terms in English, French and German. The VBFEh is now answering this with a trilingual dictionary so that this very specific subject of fatigue life can be discussed in the English, French and German speaking countries without any language barrier.
The first edition of the "Dictionary of Fatigue Strength under Variable Stress Amplitude" German-English/English-German as well as German-French/ French-German is the result of a cooperation of several experts; it was compiled by Dipl.-Ing. Kerstin Garbracht, GRIPS, Bad Harzburg. This support is greatly acknowledged.
Beyond doubt, this first compilation of more than 3000 entries cannot be in any way complete, translation into the respective language may even be occasionally unsatisfactory. Nevertheless, may this dictionary be a welcome support to all those who are involved in international communication on the subject of fatigue strength under variable stress amplitude. The editor will be pleased to accept any suggestions for improvement as well as additional terms.
VBFEh greatfully acknowledges the financial support of all associate companies, which allows the compilation and edition of this dictionary.
